The van driver, 28-year-old Baytown resident Cesar Rojas, and passengers Emmanuel Reynosa Rivas, Angel Dominguez and Oswaldo Alvarez died in the crash, according to authorities. Tthe other five passengers were hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. One of them, 21-year-old Caleb Burge, 21, died on May 20.
The bus driver and the Audi driver were treated and released from a Port Arthur hospital, authorities said.
Authorities have not released any additional information about the Jefferson County crash at this time. The accident is still under investigation.
How Did This Accident Occur?
Initial reports indicate that a northbound van crashed into a southbound bus, but it isn’t clear why that happened. Was the van driver distracted, perhaps by a cell phone? Did another vehicle force it into oncoming traffic? Did the van have a problem with its brakes or steering mechanism? The best way to answer these questions, in my experience, is to wait until the investigation into this crash is completed.
Authorities likely will gather physical evidence, witness statements, data from the vehicles and any available video footage as they work to reconstruct this accident. Cell phone records could show what the drivers were doing at the time of the crash. An independent expert likely will be needed if investigators suspect a mechanical issue contributed to the crash because most law enforcement agencies don’t have the time or training for that kind of forensic examination.
A thorough investigation like this is necessary to provide answers to the families impacted by this crash.
