When I read about crashes like this one, my first thought is that I hope investigators are asking the right questions to determine exactly what happened. Many people assume that when a vehicle crosses the centerline, the cause must be driver error—whether from distraction, fatigue, or impairment. While that’s a possibility, experience has shown me that there are often other contributing factors that need to be examined. To fully understand this crash, three critical questions must be answered.
The first question is whether the authorities are conducting a thorough investigation. Law enforcement typically gathers evidence at the scene, but their ability to reconstruct a crash depends on available resources and training. In a case like this, where a vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic, it’s important to determine whether investigators are considering all possible explanations. Was the Ford Fusion driver attempting to avoid an obstacle? Did road conditions play a role? Were there any mechanical failures or medical emergencies involved? A comprehensive accident reconstruction can help establish why the vehicle left its lane and whether any outside factors contributed to the collision.
The next question—one that is often overlooked—is whether a vehicle defect played a role. Modern vehicles rely on electronic systems, such as lane departure warnings, electronic stability control, and power steering assist, to help keep drivers in their lanes. If the Fusion experienced a failure in one of these systems, it could have contributed to the driver losing control. Additionally, given the seriousness of the Dodge Ram driver’s injuries, investigators should also examine whether safety features like airbags and seatbelts in both vehicles functioned properly. Unfortunately, vehicle defects often go undiagnosed because the vehicles are repaired or scrapped before a proper forensic examination can take place. Preserving both vehicles for further inspection is crucial.
The final question is whether all relevant electronic data has been collected. Both vehicles’ electronic control modules (ECMs) may contain key information about speed, braking, and steering inputs before the crash. Additionally, dashcam footage, traffic camera recordings, or surveillance video from nearby businesses could provide valuable insight into the moments leading up to the collision. Cell phone data may also help determine whether distraction or a medical issue played a role. Preserving and analyzing this data quickly is critical before it is lost or overwritten.
At the end of the day, getting answers to these questions isn’t just about understanding what happened—it’s about making sure those affected by this crash have all the information they deserve. Serious crashes leave families searching for answers, and the least we can do as a community is ensure that every possible factor is investigated so that no question is left unanswered.
