A crash in Ector County occurred on Friday, August 8th when a northbound 2015 Peterbilt truck, hauling a trailer, allegedly suffered a front left tire blowout on US Highway 385. The blowout reportedly caused the driver to lose control, cross the median, and enter the southbound lanes. The driver then attempted to cross back over through the cable barrier to avoid oncoming traffic, but the truck struck a southbound 2021 Chevrolet Silverado in the process. The collision killed 33-year-old Johnny Saenz of Andrews, Texas, who was a passenger in the Silverado. The crash remains under investigation.

Given that a front tire blowout is a serious and often catastrophic event for a commercial vehicle, investigators will need to determine whether the tire failure was the result of poor maintenance or a product defect.

Could a Defective Tire Have Been a Factor?

Commercial truck tires are subject to strict safety standards, but manufacturing defects can still occur. These defects may involve issues with the tire’s tread adhesion, sidewall construction, or materials. Investigators will likely need to examine whether the failed tire had any structural anomalies that could have caused a sudden rupture, even if it appeared to be in good condition before the crash. Determining the tire’s production date, brand, and model will help establish whether it was part of a defective batch or subject to any recalls.

What Evidence Should Be Collected?

To determine why the tire failed, investigators should preserve the damaged tire for forensic examination. The truck’s maintenance logs will be important in showing how often the tire was inspected and whether any prior issues were noted. Data from the Engine Control Module (ECM) can reveal the truck’s speed, steering input, and brake application at the time of the blowout, which can help confirm how the loss of control happened. Any dash camera or roadside video footage could also provide visual confirmation of when and how the tire failure occurred.

Why a Complete Investigation Is Critical

When a tire blowout results in a fatal collision, understanding the cause is essential. A thorough investigation can determine whether the event was the result of driver negligence, improper maintenance, or a defective product. If a manufacturing defect is confirmed, it will help assign accountability where appropriate.
