Harris County, TX — January 8, 2024. two people were killed and one was injured after a fire accident on a cargo ship at the Barbours Cut container terminal.
Authorities say the incident happened at around 3:30 a.m. at the port in the La Porte/Morgan’s Point area and brought emergency crews from multiple surrounding areas, including Baytown, Port Houston Fire, and the Harris County Fire Marshall.

Right now, details are limited. Port Houston officials say that a fire broke out in the engine room of the cargo ship. Following rescue efforts, authorities say two ship crew members were found deceased. A third person was injured and reportedly flown to a hospital with unspecified injuries. Victims have yet to be publicly identified. Firefighters apparently worked to put out the fire until around 7:30 a.m.
The ship involved was identified in the news as the M/V Stride cargo ship which is reportedly managed by Danaos Shipping Co., a Greek company. The cause of the fire has yet to be confirmed, and the incident remains under investigation.
