How Did This Accident Occur?
People often assume that vehicle accidents are the result of driver error. That is one possibility, but investigators must consider every potential cause, no matter how remote, to figure out what actually happened on State Highway 27.
Both vehicles contain data in their engine control modules — about speed, braking and throttle use — that can help piece together what led to this crash. The truck may even be equipped with cameras to show investigators what happened. Witness statements, evidence from the scene and the driver’s cell phone records will provide additional clues, but an outside expert may be needed if investigators suspect a mechanical issue contributed to the crash. Most law enforcement agencies don’t have the time or training to conduct forensic examinations on a vehicle after an accident.
These steps are important to ensure that the Toyota driver’s family has answers to any lingering questions about this crash.
