Accident Report

Hillsboro, TX — February 28, 2026, two teens were injured in an alleged drunk driver accident at about 10:15 p.m. on the frontage road for Interstate 35.

A preliminary accident report indicates that a 2016 Mazda CX-5 was heading east on Corsicana Highway/State Highway 22 when it allegedly ran a red light and hit a northbound 1993 Buick Regal.

The Buick driver, a 16-year-old boy, and passenger, a 16-year-old girl, were seriously injured in the crash, according to the report.

The Mazda driver, who reportedly had been drinking, was charged with two counts of intoxication assault after the crash, the report states. He was not injured.

Authorities have not released any additional information about the Hill County crash at this time.

How Did This Accident Occur?

Traffic camera footage can confirm whether the Mazda SUV ran a red light, causing this collision as stated by police. A blood test can confirm if the driver truly was intoxicated, as alleged. But that doesn’t mean the investigation into this crash should stop there, because a central question still needs to be answered: Where did the driver get his alcohol?

It’s one thing if he had been drinking at home, but if he had been at a bar or restaurant before the crash, he may not be the only one responsible for the injuries it caused. Texas law holds that alcohol providers can be held accountable for injuries caused by someone who was served despite being obviously intoxicated. There is no way to know if that is what happened in this instance, but that possibility is worth investigating.

It has been my experience that most law enforcement agencies do not take the time to investigate where someone had been drinking in the wake of an alcohol-related crash, so it often falls to families to hire an independent investigator to unearth answers for them.
