Accident Report

April 10, 2026, two teenage girls were injured due to a truck accident just after 4:00 p.m. along Interstate Highway 70.

According to authorities, three people—a 21-year-old woman and two 15-year-old girls—were traveling in an eastbound Jeep Cherokee on I-70 in the vicinity east of New Florence when the accident took place. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, an eastbound Kenworth truck with a trailer in tow made a lane change at an unsafe time. A collision consequently occurred between the Jeep and the Kenworth’s trailer. The Jeep apparently came to a stop resting in the median of the interstate.

Both of the 15-year-old girls who had been in the Jeep reportedly sustained serious injuries over the course of the accident. They were each transported to area medical facilities by EMS in order to receive necessary treatment. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.

How Did This Accident Occur?

Over the last three decades in which I have been in this career, I’ve had the chance to analyze hundreds of truck accidents. The fact is, until the investigation is complete, we can’t know, for sure, what the cause of the accident was. However, there are several questions that come to my mind that I hope are answered by the investigation.

Is it possible that driver error was the cause? Sure. Truck cabs are like an office on wheels. The driver could have been distracted by contact with his dispatch, a GPS, a routing call on their cell phone, et cetera. That’s not even considering the fact that the lane change could have been due to a steering issue rather than driver input. Did the company cut any corners with driver training, vehicle inspections, or maintenance?

Hopefully the investigators—whether the authorities or a third party—are being as meticulous and thorough as they should be in order to ensure all these questions, and more, are asked and answered. After all, the people who were affected by this accident deserve to have a clear picture of how it happened and why. Not to mention that everyone who had a hand in the outcome should be held accountable.
