How Did This Accident Occur?

Given what we’ve been told about this crash, it’s easy to point the finger at the truck driver, but the question remains: why did the semi-truck move into the oncoming lane?

Maybe the driver was fatigued or distracted by a cell phone. Maybe the truck had an issue with its steering mechanism? Maybe its cargo shifted, causing the truck to react unexpectedly.

Investigators should consider these possibilities as they pore over evidence from the scene, data from the trucks and any available video footage of the crash. Many fleet vehicles these days are equipped with cameras, but the footage must be recovered before the truck is scrapped or repaired.

It also is worth looking into the driver’s logs and the truck’s maintenance records to determine if the trucking company had kept him on the road longer than allowed or skipped necessary maintenance.
