Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

There isn’t a lot of information available right now, and that usually means there’s a lot of room for people to speculate—something I of course discourage. People tend to jump to the conclusion that some common factor led to the crash, and that usually means blaming the driver. But all kinds of things could lead to this sort of accident. Mechanical defects, road hazards, tire failure, medical conditions, missing signage or lighting, some sort of emergency, etc.

Likely or not, these things happen, and any thorough accident reconstruction should at least be able to rule these things out. It can be surprising, then, when people affected by a serious accident find out authorities aren’t always so thorough, and they can miss important details. Maybe officials have been handling this accident more carefully, but if it took independent investigations to get all the facts here, it certainly wouldn’t be the first time.
