How Did This Accident Occur?
Most people write off single-vehicle accidents as being caused by driver error without giving them a second thought. I, however, have been in this line of business for over three decades. In that time, I’ve seen plenty of single-vehicle accidents where evidence of less likely causes were unearthed by the investigation. That is why I am slow to jump to conclusions.
That’s not to say that I know more about this specific accident than anyone else outside of the investigation. Could driver error—distraction, fatigue, impairment, et cetera—have played a role? It’s yet to have been ruled out, as far as I know. But what if, hypothetically, the wreck was caused by something wrong with the vehicle—such as a steering mechanism issue, for example? Something like that may be less likely, but it certainly isn’t outside of the realm of possibilities.
Hopefully, investigators—whether the authorities or a third party—get an in-depth vehicle inspection done on the Honda. That way, any underlying mechanical malfunctions or product defects that played a role in the wreck won’t fly under the radar. After all, rather than possibly unmerited blame, the victim deserves clear answers backed by solid evidence. Surface-level investigation just won’t cut it.
