According to authorities, 71-year-old Sharon Wimberly was traveling in a northwest bound Toyota Avalon on the Stemmons Freeway frontage road at the Sam Rayburn southwest bound exit ramp intersection when the accident took place. A collision consequently occurred between the front-end of the Avalon and the front-left of a southwest bound Mercedes-Benz occupied by a 35-year-old man.
Wimberly reportedly sustained fatal injuries over the course of the accident. It does not appear that anyone else was injured. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
How Did This Accident Occur?
News reports say that the Avalon purportedly entered the intersection at an unsafe time, but my question is why. Most people will assume it was the ubiquitous “driver error”. However, I’ve been in this line of work for over three decades. I’ve learned not to jump to that conclusion, no matter how safe a bet it might be. I’ve seen too many cases where investigations unearth less likely causes that were actually at fault.
It’s up to investigators—either authorities assigned to the case or a third party—to ask the right questions, look in the right places, and get the needed answers. A quick search on Google Maps will show you that the intersection is controlled by a traffic signal. Traffic lights are excellent tools, but they are not infallible. Are investigators looking into whether or not it may have been faulty at the time of the wreck? What about the vehicles. Investigations can get vehicle inspections done in order to bring to light any underlying mechanical malfunctions that might have caused the Avalon to enter the intersection. Also, they can check to make sure the safety mechanisms—like seatbelts and airbags—were functioning correctly.
A proper, thorough investigation will give the loved ones of Sharon Wimberly the answers they deserve as they work toward closure. What do you think? Were you there to witness this accident? Were there any important details that news reports left out? Feel free to let me know in a comment below.
