Officials indicate that, for reasons yet to be confirmed, a southbound Chevrolet Traverse SUV occupied by a 60-year-old man and a 56-year-old woman failed to safely maintain its lane of travel; it reportedly veered left of center, entering the oncoming lane of traffic, which resulted in a collision with the northbound pickup truck. The collision caused the pickup to overturn, coming to a stop resting on its left side.

Macdonald suffered apparently severe injuries and was flown to an area hospital in order to receive immediate treatment. The two people from the SUV sustained minor injuries, as well, according to reports; they were each taken to a local medical facility by EMS for care.
