Accident Report

March 9, 2026, one person sustained injuries following a car accident that happened around 9:49 p.m. along US Highway 84.

Authorities said in initial statements that the accident happened near the US 84/Bellmead Drive and Loop 340 intersection northeast of Waco.

According to officials, a 42-year-old man was on foot at the time. A Chevy Equinox was traveling northeast on US 84 when it struck the pedestrian. Due to this, the pedestrian was seriously injured.

Reports show that the driver remained at the scene. Additional details about the cause of the accident are unavailable at this time.

How Did This Accident Occur?

On a road like this, pedestrian accidents often center around where exactly the pedestrian was, how visible they were, and how reasonably avoidable they were.

For example, if a driver is doing everything right—going at appropriate speeds, maintaining their tires and brakes, paying attention to the road, etc.—and doesn’t have enough time or space to avoid someone in the road, it’s unlikely they’d ever be responsible for hitting a pedestrian.

Alternatively, if a pedestrian is clearly visible and far away enough to avoid, but a driver fails to avoid them it raises serious questions about why that driver couldn’t avoid an otherwise avoidable collision.

How that all played out here remains unclear, so I hope authorities are looking into this from all angles. I’ve seen too many situations where authorities just see that a pedestrian wasn’t in a crosswalk, and they consider the matter open-and-shut. Accidents are rarely that simple, and it’s important to know the full story before drawing any final conclusions. Whether authorities can do that on their own or need independent investigators stepping in, that remains to be seen.
