How Did This Accident Occur?
I’ve been in this line of business for over three decades. In that time, I’ve had the opportunity to analyze hundreds of pedestrian-involved car accidents. You would be surprised how many people quick to just blame the victims of these accidents. That’s not to say that I know more about this specific accident than anyone else outside of the investigation. I just can’t help but wonder a few things.
Was there enough infrastructure for pedestrian use—like sidewalks and crosswalks—in the area? The accident occurred in the dark hours of the early morning. Was there a sufficient amount of street lighting? What about the car that struck the man? Was it equipped with pedestrian detection? If so, did it somehow not work correctly? Did its brakes or steering malfunction at a critical moment, making it difficult or impossible to avoid a collision with the victim when it should not have been?
Hopefully the investigators—whether the authorities or a third party—are being appropriately thorough and openminded as they get look into things. That way, important factors don’t end up falling though the cracks.
