How Did This Accident Occur?

Head-on crashes like this typically involve one vehicle leaving its lane, but at this point we don’t know which one or why. Was one of these drivers distracted? Or did one of the vehicles have a mechanical issue that affected its steering or brakes?

Authorities shouldn’t have much trouble figuring out which vehicle moved into oncoming traffic by reviewing witness statements, evidence from the scene, data from the vehicles and any available dashcam footage. Cell phone records can show if either drive was texting or interacting with an app at the time of the crash.

Determining whether either vehicle had a mechanical problem may be beyond the expertise of law enforcement investigators, in my experience. A forensic exam of the pickup and the semi needs to be done by a qualified expert in a laboratory setting.

These steps will yield the facts necessary to reconstruct this crash, providing answers for the families affected by this accident.
