How Did This Accident Occur?
Most people probably would blame the motorcyclist for this crash, since his vehicle crashed into the back of the semi-truck. That is probably because people are inclined to believe that motorcyclists are reckless, but in my experience the opposite is true. Motorcyclists tend to be safer because they know they have to watch out for other drivers who usually aren’t watching for them.
The best way to figure out what happened at this Ocala intersection is to wait until a full investigation is completed. That should yield the facts needed to piece together how these two vehicles came together.
Did the truck turn without checking oncoming traffic? Was the driver rushing because he was facing an unrealistic deadline? Did the trailer swing wider than necessary because the truck had a problem with its steering mechanism?
Investigators must consider these questions as they pore over witness statements, data from the vehicles, cell phone records and any available video footage of the crash. A forensic examination of both vehicles could determine if either had any mechanical defects, but that is likely beyond the capabilities of law enforcement. Most agencies don’t have the time or training for such exams, in my experience.
These steps are vital to provide answers to any lingering questions plaguing the motorcyclist’s family after this crash. Did you see anything that could help with this investigation? Tell us about it in the comments.
