Accident Report

Dripping Springs, TX — April 18, 2026, a teen was injured in a single-vehicle accident at about 1:50 a.m. in the 1800 block of U.S. Highway 290.

A preliminary accident report indicates that a 2009 Toyota FJ Cruiser was heading northeast toward Purcell Road when it left the road and crashed into a highway sign.

The driver, a 16-year-old boy, was seriously injured in the crash, according to the report.

Authorities have not released any additional information about the Hays County crash at this time.

How Did This Accident Occur?

It would be easy to assume this crash was caused by an inexperienced young driver, but my experience with more than 30 years’ worth of accident investigations have proven it’s always better to rely on facts than assumptions.

Maybe this teen was distracted when his vehicle ran off the road, but what if something else caused this crash? It could have been forced off the road by another vehicle, or maybe the Toyota had an issue with its steering mechanism. A full investigation of this accident should consider those possibilities as authorities gather evidence to determine what actually happened at U.S. 290.

Data from the vehicle, cell phone records and any available video footage of the crash will help reconstruct this accident, but an outside expert likely will be needed if authorities suspect a vehicle defect contributed to the crash. In my experience, most law enforcement agencies lack the time or training for forensic examinations. Such exams should be done in laboratory settings for best results.

A thorough investigation is needed so the injured teen and his family don’t have any lingering questions about the crash.
