How Did This Accident Occur?
Most people will take one look at this accident and assume it was caused by driver error solely based on the fact that speed seems to have been a factor. I’ve been in this line of business for over thirty years, though. I’ve seen plenty of cases in which evidence of less likely causes ended up being unearthed by the investigation. Because of that, I’m slow to jump to conclustions.
To be clear, I don’t know more about this specific accident than anyone else outside of the investigation. I just want to suggest a hypothetical. What if the pickup’s speed was not caused by driver input? Hypothetically, it could have been due to brake failure or a throttle issue. An in-depth vehicle inspection done by a professional in a laboratory setting would be able to bring to light any mechanical malfunctions or product defects that might otherwise have flown under the radar.
I understand that these are not routinely done in most accident investigations, so a special request might have to be made. If the authorities fail to take that step, then a third party investigation can always be called upon to do so, instead. That way all the bases are covered. After all, the people affected by this accident deserve a clear and detailed understanding of how and why it occurred. Vague assumptions based on surface-level investigation just can’t provide that kind of clarity.
