How Did This Accident Occur?
Even with so little known about how this accident occurred, most people will be quick to blame the victim. I have been in this line of business for over thirty years, though. I’ve come to believe, over that time, that motorcyclists tend to get a bad rap. I’ve seen plenty of similar cases where evidence of causes that went against the grain of the stereotype ended up being unearthed by the investigation. Because of that, I’m slow to make assumptions.
That’s not to say I know more specifics about this accident than anyone else outside of the investigation. It’s just that I have a long list of questions running through my head. What condition was that truck in? Did it have it’s mirrors properly positioned? Was the truck driver paying attention to their surroundings, or were they distracted by something inside their cab? Did one or the other of the vehicles experience mechanical malfunction? Could brake failure or tire blowout have been a factor? Was either driver fatigued or impaired in some way? Honestly, I could go on and on.
Hopefully, investigators—whether the authorities or a third party—put in the time and effort necessary to get to the bottom of it. After all, the people affected by this accident deserve to be given a clear and detailed understanding of not only how it took place, but why. Surface-level investigation that conveniently blames the victim just won’t cut it.
