Accident Report
March 20, 2026, a man from Utah lost his life due to a motorcycle accident just after 2:00 a.m. along Interstate Highway 35E.
According to authorities, a 53-year-old man from Sandy, Utah, was traveling on a northbound Suzuki motorcycle taking the ramp from I-35E to I-635 when the accident took place. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, the motorcycle failed to control its speed. It was consequently involved in a single-vehicle collision in which it apparently overturned.
The man reportedly sustained fatal injuries over the course of the accident. Additional details pertaining to this incident—including the identity of the victim—are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
How Did This Accident Occur?
Reading about single-vehicle motorcycle accidents caused by excessive speed, it’s easy for people to jump to the conclusion that driver error was the cause. While that is a distinct possibility, I’ve learned over the last three decades in which I have been in this line of business not to discount other possible causes. I’ve seen plenty of similar cases where the investigation turned up evidence of things that were not immediately apparent.
To be clear, I don’t know more about this accident than anyone else outside of the investigation. I just want to suggest a hypothetical. What if the reason the motorcycle failed to control its speed was due to brake failure? Hopefully the authorities get an in-depth vehicle inspection done on the motorcycle by a trained professional in a laboratory setting. That’s how underlying mechanical malfunctions and product defects—such as brake failure—can be brought to light.
Frankly, these types of inspections are not routinely done in most vehicle accident investigations, so a special request might have to be made. If, for whatever reason, the authorities still fail to take that step, a third party investigation can always do so, instead. That way, all the bases are covered.
After all, the people who were affected by this accident deserve to be given a detailed picture of how this accident happened, and why, not just vague assumptions that heap possibly unmerited blame on the shoulders of the deceased.
