Accident Report
March 9, 2026, Matthew Galvan lost his life in a single-car accident just after 2:00 a.m. along Interstate Highway 37.
According to authorities, two people—21-year-old Matthew Galvan and a 23-year-old woman—were traveling in a southbound Chevrolet Corvette on I-37 near Florida Street when the accident took place. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, the Corvette failed to appropriately control its speed. It was consequently involved in a single-vehicle collision in which it apparently struck a guardrail.
Galvan reportedly sustained fatal injuries over the course of the accident. It does not appear that the passenger was hurt. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
How Did This Accident Occur?
Most people will look at this accident—a young driver in a fancy, fast car—and assume that driver error must have been the cause. While that would probably be a safe bet, I just can’t hop on that band wagon. Over the three decades I’ve been doing this job, I’ve seen too many cases that prove the stereotype doesn’t always fit the scenario.
To be clear, I do not know more about this particular accident than anyone else outside of the investigation. I just want to suggest a hypothetical. It might sound far-fetched, but what if the Corvette’s speed was due to a mechanical malfunction? Did the throttle get stuck in the open position? Did the brakes fail, making it difficult or impossible to slow down? These questions can be answered by a vehicle inspection.
Vehicle inspections are not routinely done in most accident investigations, but a special request can be made. Also, if the authorities fail to take that step, then a third party investigation can be brought in to take up the slack. After all, the people left behind by the Galvan deserve to have real answers, not a cursory investigation that conveniently heaps possibly unmerited blame on the shoulders of the deceased.
