How Did This Accident Occur?
A lot of people jump to conclusions when it comes to motorcycle accidents. Riders get a bad rap, and folks assume the rider was being reckless and speeding, and that’s what caused the crash. I’ve been in this line of work for over 30 years. In my experience, motorcyclists tend to be safer drivers than typical car drivers. They have to be, in fact, because a lot of larger vehicle drivers don’t keep a proper lookout for smaller vehicles.
So while it’s entirely possible this crash involved something common, like distraction, fatigue, speeding, or alcohol, investigations need to consider other possible factors, as well. Was there a vehicle defect? Did the bike hit something in the road? Did some reckless driver cut off the victim, then flee the scene?
It’s not about shifting the blame or pretending like motorcyclists can’t make mistakes—they can. It’s about being fair. These questions are just as important to answer for someone on two wheels as it would be for someone on four or eighteen. Doing so can be absolutely crucial for making sure a family is getting the full story they deserve, and it might even reveal that there were extenuating circumstances initial investigations missed.
