How Did This Accident Occur?

Given that I’ve spent more than 30 years involved in crash investigations, I’ve learned to keep an open mind about commercial vehicle accidents, particularly at intersections. Facts are always better than assumptions or guesses when it comes to figuring out how a truck crash happened.

Investigators should download data from both vehicles and track down any available video footage of this crash. That will be more reliable that witness statements, which always are colored by personal experience and biases. Electronic data will provide a clear view of what happened, and whether a forensic examination of the vehicles is necessary. Such an exam likely will have to be done by a qualified expert if a vehicle defect is suspected, because in my experience most law enforcement agencies lack the necessary training.

A thorough investigation will help answer any lingering questions plaguing the pickup driver’s family after this crash.
