How Did This Accident Occur?

It’s not clear at this point which vehicle, the semi or the Chevrolet, left its lane to cause this crash, but authorities should be able to figure that out quickly from evidence at the scene, but the why may be harder to deduce. Was one of these drivers distracted, perhaps by a cell phone? Did one vehicle swerve to avoid another vehicle or an object in the road? Did one vehicle have a mechanical problem that contributed to this crash? A full investigation is the only way to find answers to those questions.

Both vehicles likely have engine control modules that record speed, throttle and braking inputs before the crash. The semi-truck may even have been equipped with cameras that could show what was happening in the cab and on the road at the time. Cell phone records also could help establish what each driver was doing.

But if authorities suspect a mechanical issue may have contributed to this crash, it likely will take an independent expert to complete a forensic examination of the vehicle before it is scrapped or repaired. In my experience, most law enforcement agencies don’t have the time or training for such exams, but they can prove vital in ensuring that the victims’ families get the answers they need about what happened on U.S. 83.
