How Did This Accident Occur?
When it comes to single-vehicle truck accidents, most people are quick to point the finger at the driver. After all, driver error—whether due to distraction, fatigue, impairment, or something else altogether—plays a role in the majority of car accidents. However, I’ve been in this line of business for over thirty years. In that time, I’ve seen plenty of similar cases in which evidence of less likely causes ended up being unearthed by the investigation. That is precisely why I’m slow to jump to conclusions.
To be transparent, I’m not trying to insinuate that I know more about this specific accident than anyone else outside of the investigation. I’m just trying to point out that, hypothetically, something might have gone wrong with the truck to cause the wreck. Any number of things could have been behind it—like brake failure, steering column issues, tire blowout, suspension problems, et cetera. Honestly, I could go on and on with the possibilities. An in-depth vehicle inspection done by a team of trained professionals in a laboratory setting would be able to pinpoint any problems like that, rather than allow them to fly under the radar.
If an issue with the truck does end up having been the cause, then it might be wise to look into the trucking company, as well. I would be interested to know whether or not any regular inspections or scheduled maintenance was skipped in the interest of saving the company time or money. If so, then the company might hold a portion of the responsibility for the outcome of the wreck.
Hopefully the investigators—whether the authorities or a third party—get to the bottom of it with meticulous and openminded work. After all, the people affected by this accident deserve to be given a clear and detailed understanding of how and why it occurred. Vague assumptions based on surface-level investigation the conveniently blame the victim just won’t cut it.
