With single-vehicle wrecks, it’s important to keep in mind that a lot can go wrong, and not every possible factor is within a driver’s control. Medical emergencies, road hazards, tire blowouts, mechanical defects, animals in the road, a lack of signage or lighting—these have caused accidents before, and they will again. So when authorities are too quick to just assume the driver did something wrong, they risk letting important details slip through the cracks.
I don’t have specific reason to believe that’s happening here, but I’ve lost count of how many people have called me over the years worried that police are missing something. That’s why single-vehicle wrecks are sometimes better off in the hands of independent investigators, and it wouldn’t be surprising if the same proved true here.
