How Did This Accident Occur?
A lot of people just assume single-vehicle accidents must be the result of a driver making a mistake. Frankly, that’s common, and it wouldn’t be unusual if that happened here. But I’ve handled countless single-vehicle accident cases, and drivers can’t always avoid them.
Tires blow out, brakes fail, roads can have hazards, signage may be missing, a medical episode can arise, reckless drivers can run people off the road, etc. The goal of an accident reconstruction should be to leave all bias and preconceived notions at the door and focus on letting the evidence speak for itself.
Sometimes, authorities are able to do this, but I generally rely on independent accident reconstructionists. I find both that they’re more effective than the authorities and also that families are more often reassured by their efforts. Even if those efforts only confirm what police already know, people deserve to know the facts were considered by professionals who weren’t going to treat their loved one like a “bad guy”. After all, when someone isn’t around to give their side of the story, families deserve to know someone will help tell it in their stead. Hopefully steps are taken to ensure that happens here.
