Accident Report

April 25, 2026, Karla Perez was killed and one was injured due to an alleged intoxicated driver accident at 2:20 a.m. on Gessner Road.

Houston Police officials said that the crash took place near the intersection of Gessner Road and Centrepark Drive, just south of Clay Road.

According to investigators, a 23-year-old woman and 24-year-old Karla Perez were in a Honda going northbound on Gessner. While attempting a turn, authorities say that a Ford going at unsafe speeds crashed into the Honda. Due to this, Karla Perez sustained fatal injuries. The Honda driver had unspecified injuries.

Authorities at this time allege that the Ford driver was intoxicated. They recommended a charge for intoxication manslaughter. Investigations are ongoing.

How Did This Accident Occur?

I have yet to see authorities specify if they believe drugs or alcohol contributed to this accident. I don’t know the answer for certain (I’m just reading the news like everyone else), but I have my suspicions.

Put simply, I’ve been a part of literally hundreds of intoxicated driving accident investigations. At this time of night—just minutes after bars close—it almost always comes to light that the driver was drunk. Additionally, though, retracing the intoxicated driver’s steps often shows that a negligent bar unlawfully over-served the driver. That could mean that both the alleged intoxicated driver and a negligent alcohol provider contributed to the accident and could face serious legal consequences.

Maybe that isn’t what happened here, but I hope it’s on the police’s radar. I can’t begin to count how many times my team and I have looked into drunk driving accidents where authorities simply began and ended their efforts at the crash scene. That sort of oversight just allows law-breaking providers to continue putting the community in danger. Rooting out their behavior, though, helps see there are consequences when appropriate and gets those establishments to clean up their act.

Put another way, families deserve to know the full story, and they especially deserve to know there’s going to be accountability. Sometimes, that’s just charges for a single reckless driver who decided to drive while impaired. Other times, it includes a local alcohol provider who cared more about racking up a tab than following the law. Ultimately, that’s all up to investigations to say for sure, but it often falls to the families themselves to decide if those investigations are in the right hands.

Do you agree that alcohol is the most likely factor here? If alcohol was a factor, do you agree investigators should look into where it came from? Let me know in the comments.
