How Did This Accident Occur?
It seems clear that the construction truck hit the pedestrian on Sussex Avenue, but at this point we don’t know why. Was the pedestrian trying to cross the street or walking in it? Was the truck driver distracted? Or did that truck have a mechanical problem that affected its brakes or steering?
Even though I’ve been part of thousands of crash investigations during my career, I don’t know the answers to those questions. They can only be answered by a full investigation of this crash, aided by witness statements, evidence at the scene, data from the truck’s engine control module and any available security camera footage. A forensic examination of the truck may require an independent investigator, since most law enforcement agencies lack the time or training for such probes.
