How Did This Accident Occur?
Most people will take one look at this accident—a single-vehicle motorcycle wreck—and assume it was due to driver error without giving it a second glance. I’m not trying to insinuate that I know for sure that driver error—whether due to distraction, fatigue, impairment, et cetera—couldn’t have been the cause. It’s just that I’ve been in this line of business for over thirty years. I’ve seen plenty of similar cases in which evidence of less likely causes ended up being unearthed by the investigation that went against the grain of the stereotype. That is why, as a general rule, I am slow to jump to conclusions.
To be clear, I’m not saying I know more specifics about this wreck than anyone else outside of the investigation. I just want to point out that, hypothetically, something could have gone wrong with the Honda to cause the wreck. Motorcycles, while smaller than passenger vehicles, are still complex machines. Any number of things could have happened—like brake failure or throttle problems, for example—to lead to the motorcycle’s excessive speed.
An in-depth vehicle inspection done by a trained professional in a laboratory setting would be able to bring to light any mechanical malfunctions or product defects that might otherwise have flown under the radar. Hopefully, the authorities get one done. If they don’t, then a third party investigation can always be called upon to do so, instead. That way all the bases are covered. After all, the people affected by this accident deserve to be given a clear and detailed understanding of how and why it occurred. Surface-level investigation just can’t provide that kind of clarity.
