Waxahachie, TX — November 19, 2023, Jose Otero Torres and two others were injured in a car accident on 4:29 a.m. along Interstate 35E.

Authorities said in their statements that the accident happened near Ovilla Road. It appears 28-year-old Jose Otero Torres and a 21-year-old were in a Chevy pickup going southbound along the interstate. Also southbound was a 53-year-old in a Chevy Astro van.

Ahead of those vehicles, police say a Mazda 3 somehow crashed into the guardrail along the interstate, leaving the vehicle sideways across travel lanes. The pickup and the van then collided with the Mazda.

As a result of the collision, Otero Torres and his passenger has apparently non-incapacitating injuries. The driver of the van had apparently incapacitating injuries. Details about the driver of the Mazda are limited right now.

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

Authorities said there were recommended charges for failure to comply with duties upon striking a fixed object, which usually suggests a driver left the scene of the accident. But were they still on the scene when the victims hit the disabled vehicle? Do authorities have the vehicle in their possession, or did the driver drive away from the scene after the collisions? There are simply too many unanswered questions right now, and I can only hope authorities no more than what they’re telling the public—for the sake of the victims and their families, if nothing else.
