How Did This Accident Occur?

People see a 2:00 a.m. single-vehicle crash, and they assume the driver must have done something wrong. Frankly, that’s usually true, considering how common distracted driving and drunk driving are. But I’ve seen plenty of crashes like this happen due to factors which were somewhat or entirely beyond a driver’s control.

For example, did the vehicle have a tire blowout? Is there not enough lighting or signage here to warn of a sudden turn? Was the driver unlawfully over-served by a bar or other establishment? Did the crash involve a medical emergency? Did some other driver with their brights on run the victim off-road, then leave the scene?

These are the kinds of questions a proper accident reconstruction should include. It doesn’t ignore the more common explanations; on the contrary, it helps ensure all possibilities get the attention they deserve so the driver has a fair chance to tell their side of the story. Whether it’s authorities or some other independent professionals, my hope is this crash gets that level of thorough investigation.

If you think that’s a fair approach to a serious crash, or you think this is just me being overly skeptical, let me know your thoughts in the comments.
