Potter County, TX — January 8, 2024, Joanne Richardson Cook and two others were injured in a truck accident just before 1:30 p.m. along I.H. 40.
According to reports, a 26-year-old man was traveling in a westbound Kenworth 18-wheeler towing a trailer on I.H. 40 in the vicinity west of Adkisson Road when the accident took place.
The weather and road conditions in the area at the time—which officials indicate were causal factors in this incident—were reported to have been snowy and icy. The Kenworth reportedly lost control and began sliding from the inside lane to the outside lane. The cab of the vehicle was reportedly in the outside lane while the trailer was still in the inside lane. A Subaru Impreza occupied by a 25-year-old man was reportedly in the outside lane and collided with the right side of the Kenworth cab. This caused the Kenworth to slide around and back toward the left where it and the trailer it was towing became jackknifed. The Subaru came to a stop partially in the outside lane and partially in the right shoulder.
A Freightliner truck and trailer was able to navigate between the Kenworth and the Subaru, but not without swerving left and colliding with the back of the Kenworth as it did so. The Freightliner came to a stop in the right shoulder in front of the Subaru. A second Freightliner with a trailer in tow attempted to break but was unable to stop before colliding with the rear-end of the Subaru. The collision caused that Freightliner’s trailer to slide forward and toward the inside lane where it collided with the right side of a Chevy Avalanche pickup truck occupied by 78-year-old Joanne Cook and a 79-year-old man. That contact forced the pickup into the back end of the trailer which was being towed by the original Freightliner.
Cook incurred suspected severe injuries as a result of the accident, while the 79-year-old man who had been in the pickup with her and the 25-year-old man from the Subaru reportedly sustained minor injuries. They were each transported to local medical facilities by EMS in order to receive necessary treatment. There were no other injuries reported.
