While no further information can be confirmed right now, these preliminary allegations alone are obviously concerning. Our communities take intoxicated driving very seriously, which is why you’ll generally see all kinds of people in the public immediately calling for an allegedly intoxicated driver to be put behind bars. But depending on if authorities believe drugs or alcohol led to the victims’ injuries, there could be even more legal consequences than just charges against an individual driver.
For example, if it turns out alcohol was the contributing intoxicant here, a proper investigation would then seek out where that alcohol came from. Many drunk driving crashes happen in part because a driver is illegally over-served by a bar or similar establishment. The servers involved, then, can also find themselves face to face with a judge. Across many of the hundreds of times I’ve assisted victims and families looking to hold bars accountable through the civil courts, authorities were simultaneously taking servers to the criminal courts for breaking the law and contributing to the accident. That’s why it wouldn’t be too surprising here if authorities ended up filing charges against an accomplice.
