Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Obviously it’s concerning any time authorities mention someone was driving on the wrong side of the road. However, as always I caution against jumping to conclusions about how they might have gotten there. Unusual factors cause accidents all the time, and investigators must be thorough to ensure the whole story is known.
For example, a few years back a major toll road here in Dallas had an unusually high number of incidents involving wrong-way drivers. For a while the public just assumed those drivers were simply reckless, but researchers actually found out that the warning signs along the toll road’s exit ramps were too high for drivers to see. Officials had the signs lowered to eye level, the number of incidents went down.
That’s a pretty unusual set of circumstances, of course. Are there more likely explanations? Of course, and I’m sure investigators will consider many common explanations as they learn the whole story. The main point here is that things are rarely as simple as they may seem, so it’s important serious accidents always get a careful investigation.
