Details can’t be confirmed right now, but authorities reported looking into alcohol as a possibility.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
It’s possible authorities are only considering alcohol because it’s standard procedure. If it was a factor here, though, it could make things a lot more complex than folks may realize. This is because there is often an accomplice to drunk driving wrecks which police investigations alone tend to overlook: a negligent alcohol provider.
Simply put, alcohol providers who unlawfully over-serve someone can face criminal investigations, fines, suspended licenses, or liability if that person gets themselves or someone else hurt. Most of the time, authorities begin and end their investigations at the crash scene. As a result, these negligent alcohol providers are simply let off the hook, and they continue over-serving people until someone else gets hurt.
That’s one of the reasons alcohol-related accidents are generally better off in the hands of independent investigations. I’ve handled hundreds of alcohol-related accident cases, and I never take details from police at face value. It’s always important to dig further into the details and make sure all wrongdoers involved have their day to answer for their actions. Whether or not authorities are taking steps to see that happens here remains to be seen.
