Accident Report

March 3, 2026, an Illinois truck driver was injured due to a semi-truck accident at around 8:00 p.m. on US Highway 36.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that the accident happened just east of Chillicothe at the intersection of US 36 and Route CC.

It appears that the truck driver was in a 2016 Volvo traveling westbound along the highway. The truck reportedly ran off the side of the road where it crashed into an embankment. Due to this, the truck driver sustained serious injuries.

There did not appear to be anyone else injured in the crash. Additional details are unavailable.

How Did This Accident Occur?

A lot of people think that finding out what happened in a single-vehicle crash should be easy because there’s only one vehicle involved. Not only is that untrue, but it’s especially untrue when that vehicle is a commercial truck. The reality is that all kinds of factors—common and uncommon alike—can cause a vehicle to lose control. And professional drivers have challenges to deal with that normal drivers never encounter.

For example, was the driver being forced to work long hours? Did they have an employer who wouldn’t maintain their trucks? Was the truck hauling cargo that a work crew secured improperly? Was there some sort of unforeseeable defect due to manufacturing mistakes? Was the driver pressured to operate in unsafe conditions to meet an unreasonable deadline?

I’ve handled hundreds of commercial vehicle accident cases, and I rarely see authorities ask these questions. People seem to forget that there are things truck drivers can’t always control. If investigations fail to consider those possibilities, they could miss important information, or they could even end up blaming someone for something they couldn’t avoid.

So, whatever ultimately happened here, my hope is that investigations are thorough enough to consider all possibilities. If any truck drivers think I left out some important possible challenges they’ve had to deal with, let me know in the comments.
