How Did This Accident Occur?
This early in the morning, a truck driver crashing into an emergency vehicle with its lights on raises serious red flags for fatigue. Distracted driving—often due to a cellphone—is also a very common factor. Of course, it’s possible there are unusual circumstances surrounding this crash. The truck may have swerved to avoid some other reckless driver. Maybe the truck experienced unforeseeable brake failure. But even in the more likely scenario that the truck driver made a mistake, there could be more to the story.
For example, I had a case a while back involving a truck driver who had been behind the wheel for over 20 hours straight. That alone was damning enough, but we kept digging into the driver’s schedule. What we found was an entire trucking company coercing drivers into breaking rules and cutting corners to meet unreasonable deadlines. Essentially, if drivers took the time to be safe and follow the rules, they risked their livelihood. This sort of behavior obviously was going to get someone hurt or killed, and that’s exactly what happened.
Ultimately, this accident on I-10 took the life of a woman who was just trying to make a living. I have to wonder if it was all one person’s lapse in judgment or rather the inevitable result of problems behind the scenes. If it’s the latter, then investigations need to root out those problems so there can be accountability and so they don’t tear any other families apart.
