Accident Report

April 23, 2026, Gerardo Hernandez lost his life in a single-vehicle truck accident at approximately 9:00 a.m. along State Highway 329.

According to authorities, 62-year-old Gerardo Hernandez was traveling in a Volvo 18-wheeler with a trailer in tow on S.H. 329 in the vicinity of Mile Marker 268 when the accident took place. Preliminary reports state that the Volvo took faulty evasive action in an attempt to avoid a collision with another vehicle. It was consequently involved in a single-vehicle collision in which apparently left the road and overturned.

Hernandez—who had reportedly sustained fatal injuries over the course of the accident—was declared deceased at the scene. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.

How Did This Accident Occur?

It would be tempting for most to look at this accident and assume that it was ultimately caused by driver error. I’ve been in this line of business for over three decades, though. In that time, I’ve had the opportunity to analyze hundreds of truck accidents. There have been plenty of cases that I’ve looked at that, contrary to how things seemed on the surface, ended up having evidence of less likely causes unearthed by the investigation.

To be clear, I’m not trying to insinuate that I know more about this accident than anyone else outside of the investigation. I just want to suggest a hypothetical. What if the overturn collision was caused by something wrong with the truck itself? Was there an issue with the steering mechanism? What about the brakes? There might have been a problem with the suspension, too, seeing as how the truck overturned.

Hopefully, the authorities get an in-depth vehicle inspection done on the truck and its trailer by a team of trained professionals in a laboratory setting. That way any mechanical malfunctions or product defects that played a role in the wreck can be brought to light, rather than flying under the radar.

If, for whatever reasons, the authorities don’t take that step, then a third party investigation can always do so, instead. That way all the bases are covered. After all, those left behind by the victim deserve to be given a clear and detailed understanding of not only how the accident happened, but why. Surface-level investigation that conveniently places all the blame on the victim just won’t cut it.
