Florida Trucker Killed in 18-wheeler Accident on Highway 85 in Frio County, TX

It appears that a 41-year-old man from Kissimmee, Florida, was in a Freightliner tractor-trailer going westbound along TX-85. One of the tires reportedly blew out, causing the 18-wheeler to veer off the highway. There, it overturned. As a result, the Florida truck driver was killed. Right now, no additional details are available.

Some may not think there would be anything else to discuss, since authorities believe a tire blowout caused the crash. The problem, though, is that tire blowouts aren’t always unavoidable. Sure, a common explanation is that something in the road punctured the tire, causing it to fail. Other possibilities, though, are far more preventable. For example, if tires are worn, it’s the vehicle owner’s responsibility to fix that. This could be a driver or even their employer. Alternatively, tires can have defects from the manufacturing process that drivers and owners might not know about until it’s too late.

The challenge is that distinguishing between these potential causes is not within the scope of a typical police investigation. It takes state-of-the-art tools and specialized training to reconstruct what remains of the tire and determine what exactly caused it to fail. If authorities don’t have those resources, or if they fail to put the evidence in the hands of independent professionals who can make up for what they lack, important details could easily slip through the cracks.
