Burleson County, TX — December 31, 2023, a Fayetteville man and a woman were injured following a car accident at around 6:15 p.m. on F.M. 60.

Preliminary investigations about the crash indicate that it happened northwest of Somerville between the County Road 414 and Lakeview Drive(Recreational Road 4) intersections.

According to officials, a 33-year-old Fayetteville man and a 29-year-old woman were in a Dodge Ram 2500 which was going eastbound along F.M. 60. The vehicle somehow ended up drifting off the right side of the road where it began to overturn. The vehicle eventually rolled into a tree before coming to a stop.

The woman riding in the Dodge reportedly had serious injuries due to the crash while the Fayetteville man had apparently moderate injuries. Right now, the exact cause of the crash can’t be confirmed.

Some reading these initial details are no doubt tempted to just blame the driver and move on. I know from decades of experience how even less common possible factors are important to consider. Road hazards, medical conditions, manufacturers’ defects, brake failure, etc.—these are all important possibilities to consider if only to ensure nothing slips through the cracks.

Unfortunately, more common factors like distracted driving, drunk driving, fatigue, and speeding, for example, tend to get all of the focus, even from the authorities. Even if assumptions typically prove correct, there are bound to be crashes involving unique circumstances that victims had no control over. Is it really worth overlooking those possibilities just to be able to say, “I told you so?”
