Accident Report

March 29, 2026, one person was killed as the result of an 18-wheeler accident at around 1:55 a.m. along US Highway 75.

Authorities with the Howe Police Department released a statement which said the crash happened in the area of Hall Cemetery Road along southbound lanes of the highway.

According to officials, a car was going southbound on US 75. An 18-wheeler apparently crashed into the back of the car. As a result, a man from the car reportedly was killed.

Details regarding injuries are unavailable. Additional details about the crash are still under investigation.

How Did This Accident Occur?

Reports are still preliminary here, so it’s too early to draw any final conclusions about what caused the crash. However, when folks hear that an 18-wheeler rear-ended someone on the highway, they tend to think the same thing: Was the driver distracted? In my experience, that’s an all too common factor. It’s just not very like for a truck driver paying attention to the roadway to fail to avoid another vehicle.

There are other possibilities to consider, of course. The truck may have had defective brakes. The car might not have had its lights on. The truck driver may have been fatigued due to working unreasonably long hours. Likely or not, making a distinction between all of these things can be more challenging than folks may realize. Not even the authorities can always get clear answers right away.

For example, I handled a case a while back where a driver was hit by a semi-truck on the highway after their car broke down. The family was told that it was too dark at the time, so the truck driver had no way of avoiding the crash. That didn’t really add up, so the family asked me to look into things. Our team was able to secure video from the truck that showed both the roadway and the inside of the truck cab in the moments leading up to the crash. What we uncovered still infuriates me to this day.

From the dash cam, the victim’s car was indeed broken down in the middle of the road. However, their emergency lights and brake lights were on and clearly visible nearly a mile down the road. Despite this, the truck made no effort to move over or slow down. Why? As the cabin video showed, the driver was too busy watching shows on his tablet. He looked up and saw the car finally, but it was too late.

Just to be clear, I’m not saying that happened here. My point is it took more than just preliminary police investigations to pin down what most people assume is open-and-shut or obvious. The reality is that getting clear evidence is never simple. It requires in-depth investigations to either rule out or confirm all possible factors. If that doesn’t happen, the full story might never come to light. So, whatever led to this crash, my hope is that steps are being taken to put investigations in the rights hands so nothing important slips through the cracks.
