Accident Report

February 9, 2026, Ethel Mondeel and Nicole Ratcliff were injured following a car accident at around 7:00 p.m. along Highway 121.  

The crash reportedly happened near County Road 4915, southwest of town in Fannin County. 

According to preliminary statements, 58-year-old Ethel Mondeel was in a Honda Accord going northbound on the highway. 44-year-old Nicole Ratcliff was in a Ford F-150 going the same direction. The vehicles reportedly crossed paths, and they collided.  

Both Ethel Mondeel and Nicole Ratcliff reportedly had serious injuries. No other details about the accident are available at this time.  

How Did This Accident Occur?

People might be quick to assume something like distracted driving likely caused this crash. That’s certainly a common factor, and it deserves attention. But while distraction is one of the first things I look into when I get a car accident case, it’s far from the only thing I want answers about.  

For instance, what are road design and maintenance like in this area? Is there anyone who regularly takes this road that can shed light on what it’s like on weekday evenings? In recent years, the areas surrounding DFW have grown a lot, and the traffic on these once rural stretches of highway can sometimes be chaotic if signage and traffic signals haven’t kept up with the increased traffic. This can lead to confusion and drivers being put in unnecessarily dangerous situations.  

That’s just one possible factor, of course, but it’s an example of just how much ground a proper accident reconstruction should cover. If the official investigations have been too narrow to look into that possibility, then one would have to wonder what else they might be overlooking.
