How Did This Accident Occur?
After a single-vehicle crash like this, it’s easy to assume it was caused by driver inattention or fatigue, but I’ve been part of enough accident investigations in my career to know that facts are better than assumptions in determining what caused a crash.
What if another vehicle forced the victim’s car off the road? What if his vehicle had a problem with its brakes or steering mechanism? The only was to answer these questions is to complete a full investigation of this crash.
Investigators, either police or an independent third-party, will scrutinize evidence from the scene, data from the vehicle’s engine control module, witness statements and any available video footage of the crash to piece together why this vehicle left the road. Cell phone records may show if the driver was distracted.
If investigators suspect a mechanical issue contributed to the crash, a qualified expert will be needed to conduct a forensic examination of the vehicle in a laboratory setting.
These steps are necessary to provide answer for the victim’s family after this crash.
