Accident Report
April 28, 2026, one person was injured due to a crane truck accident that happened around 2:45 a.m. along Loop 1604.
Authorities said in preliminary statements that the accident happened between Rocket Lane and Lower Seguin Road, northeast of San Antonio.
According to officials, an 18-wheeler was driver was in a truck stopped along the side of the highway. While there, reports say that a crane truck lost one of its wheels. The wheel struck the 18-wheeler as a result.
Reports say that the 18-wheeler driver “lost consciousness.” Their condition at this time is not clear. Investigations into the accident are ongoing.
How Did This Accident Occur?
When a wheel comes off, there are two likely explanations. One is that it broke off due to a lack of proper inspections or maintenance, and the other is that it simply wasn’t put on properly. Even those two possibilities each carry deeper questions that investigations will have to answer. Was the truck not getting regular repairs? Did this happen because a repair shop messed up? Was this a problem the crane truck driver should have caught in their pre-trip check? Was it some unforeseeable manufacturing defect with the wheel assembly?
Answering these questions requires evidence. In my experience, there’s no such thing as “too soon” when it comes to preserving that evidence. There can be a “too late,” though. For example, I had a case recently where the family was very cautious—which is perfectly understandable—and wanted some time to think things over before moving forward. I told them that was totally fair, but the sooner we got to work, the more evidence we could get.
They agreed, and the next morning we issued a demand to the trucking company to preserve the truck and other vital parts that were involved in the crash. We found out that later that same afternoon that they had scheduled repairs for the truck. That would have destroyed crucial evidence that was directly related to the cause of the accident. One day later, and that evidence would have been gone.
So while I can’t say what caused this accident or even if it was avoidable or not, I can say from experience just how crucial it is to have investigators securing evidence. Whether it’s the authorities or independent professionals, looking at why this wheel came off and how that could have been avoided will be crucial going forward.
