Authorities said that 43-year-old Charles Huang was in a Tesla going northeast along the highway. A Kia Sportage was going southwest, but it was reportedly on the wrong side of the road. As a result, the Kia hit the Tesla and a Ford Explorer.
Charles Huang reportedly had serious injuries due to the crash. Authorities said alcohol may have been a factor, but that remains unconfirmed at this time.
How Did This Accident Occur?
Authorities say they suspect alcohol was a factor here, and I’m inclined to agree. Of every wrong-way crash I’ve ever had come across my desk, very few of them happened for reasons besides drunk driving. One has to consider the state of mind someone has to be in to not realize they’re driving into oncoming traffic on a divided highway. That’s why there may be more to this than just a simple case of drunk driving.
Beyond just intoxication, a lot of wrong-way drivers end up being extremely intoxicated, and that’s when there could be a negligent bar involved. Anyone who’s been outside a bar or restaurant after midnight has no doubt seen plenty of people who couldn’t tell one direction from another. When bars send customers out onto the road in this state, they’ve often broken the law. It’s unlawful to serve people who are already obviously intoxicated, and doing so means those alcohol providers can be held accountable.
So when I see a crash involving a wrong way driver at a common time of day for drunk driving, my hope is that investigations are thorough enough to go beyond the accident scene itself. Obviously, an intoxicated driver should face appropriate consequences. But if a local establishment broke the law and put them in a state that led to people getting hurt, they should also answer for their actions. It remains to be seen, though, if all that will play out here.
Did anyone see this alleged wrong-way driver prior to the accident? Let me know in the comments if so.
