Accident Report

April 21, 2026, Brian Luke was killed and others were injured after a semi-truck accident at around 11:30 a.m. on I-94.

Authorities said in preliminary statements that the accident happened along the eastbound lanes of the interstate near Benton Harbor.

It appears that traffic was moving along I-94 in a construction area. Reports suggest that a U-Haul slowed suddenly, causing other vehicles to do the same. A semi-truck then reportedly failed to control speed, rear-ending a passenger bus and an SUV.

41-year-old Brian Luke was a passenger in the bus, and it appears Brian Luke died due to the crash. Others on the bus had unspecified injuries. No other injuries were reported.

At this time, additional details about the accident are unavailable.

How Did This Accident Occur?

Generally speaking, a semi-truck crashing into slowing or stopped traffic is usually the result of the truck driver being distracted, going too fast, or following too closely. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if that happened here. Is it possible something unavoidable, like brake failure, led to the crash? Sure, and it’s important investigations cover that. It’s just not something that’s likely.

That said, the news seems to shine a light on this apparent U-Haul truck that reportedly slammed on its brakes or made some type of sudden maneuver. People often ask me about situations like that, where one person seemingly sets off a chain of events that leads to another driver crashing. What responsibility, if any, does that first driver bear? Well, like most questions regarding wrongful death law and personal injury law, it all depends on the evidence.

Generally speaking, the question about what caused someone’s injuries centers around proximate cause. To skip all the legalese, it basically revolves around what the main factor was that happened which if avoided would have prevented the injuries. So, in a situation like this, reports say a moving truck slammed on its brakes, followed by other drivers doing the same, and then the truck reportedly slammed into those vehicles. My question in that situation is: Should a reasonably prudent professional truck driver be prepared for vehicles on an interstate suddenly slowing down? Would the same events have occurred if the moving truck stopped because a couch fell in the road?

In my experience, the answer is almost always yes. But there can always be extenuating circumstances, and that’s why thorough investigations are important. For the victims and families involved in a crash like these, they deserve to know the full story, and they deserve to have as much evidence as possible helping them work toward a just resolution. I’ve never seen a serious commercial truck wreck where jumping to conclusions got them any closer to that sort of resolution.
