How Did This Accident Occur?
School bus accidents warrant extra scrutiny because these buses are trusted by parents to get their children to and from school safely. When a bus hit a child, as in this instance in South Williamsburg, authorities need to take a careful look at what happened.
Did the bus driver look for pedestrians before turning onto Lorimar Street? Was the child in the crosswalk? Did the bus have blind spots that prevented the driver from seeing the child? These are among the questions that investigators should consider as they reconstruct this crash.
In my experience, answers will come from hard evidence: witness statements, data from the bus and any available dashcam or security camera footage. This information can help establish a minute-by-minute picture of what happened, and determine if this accident was preventable.
Investigators also should look at what kind of oversight was in place for operation of this bus. Did the driver get adequate training? Had his performance been reviewed recently? Was it operated by a public school or a private contractor? These details can factor into accountability; not just for the person behind the wheel, but potentially for the district or company that put him there.
