How Did This Accident Occur?

Most people are going to look at this accident an assume it to be an open-and-shut case of driver error without giving it a second thought. I’ve been in this line of business for over three decades, though. Because of that, I’ve had the opportunity to analyze thousands of car accidents. In that time, I’ve seen plenty of cases that appeared to have been caused by one thing on the surface, only to have evidence of less likely causes end up being unearthed by the investigation. That is why, even in this case, I am slow to jump to conclusions.

That’s not to insinuate that I know more about the specifics of this accident than anyone else outside of the investigation. I simply want to point out that, driver error—whether due to distraction, fatigue, or impairment of any kind—is not the only possible cause. It could have been due to something as unlikely as brake failure at that critical moment. An in-depth vehicle inspection would be able to either rule out or bring to light any mechanical malfunctions or product defects that might have played a role in the wreck.

It’s true, these types of inspections are not done routinely in most accident investigations, seeing as how they have to be done by trained professionals in a laboratory setting; so a special request might have to be made. If the authorities don’t take that step, then a third party investigation can always be called upon to do so, instead. That way, all the bases are covered. Besides, it never hurts to bring in a second perspective in order to ensure that nothing important slips through the cracks. After all, the people affected by this accident deserve to be given a clear and detailed understanding of how and why it occurred. Surface-level investigation just can’t provide that kind of clarity.
