How Did This Accident Occur?
I’ve been in this line of business for over three decades. In that time, I’ve had the opportunity to analyze hundreds of pedestrian-involved car accidents. Honestly, there is still so much we don’t know about this accident; I’ve learned it’s prudent, over the years, to practice a little patience and wait for the investigation to be completed and it’s findings to be made public. I would advise others to do the same, no matter how tempting it might be to jump to conclusions.
The fact of the matter is, we don’t know what the root cause of the accident was. Was human error a factor? The accident did take place late in the evening. Maybe distraction, fatigue, or even impairment played a role. What about the signal light? Did it function like it was designed, or did it give contradicting signals to the pedestrian and the driver that led to the collision? They are great tools, but they aren’t infallible. And what about the vehicle itself? Could something have gone wrong with the Tahoe at a critical moment? Did it have pedestrian detection that somehow malfunctioned? Were it’s brakes in good, working condition? Or did they fail when the shouldn’t have? Perhaps an in-depth vehicle inspection should be done on it.
Hopefully the investigators—whether the authorities, or a third party—get to the bottom of it. After all, only thorough and meticulous investigation will be able to provide those affected by this accident with a clear and detailed understanding of how and why it took place. Vague assumptions based on surface-level investigation just won’t cut it.
